This half study day can be used as a refresher for the principles of recognising dying or to improve and gain knowledge base. The focus will be on ensuring the difference to people receiving end of life care and their families through identifying the dying phase. The course does not focus on symptom management as this knowledge can be accessed on alternative courses. Group discussion will feature as part of this short course and the aim is to increase your confidence in this highly important area wherever you work in health and social care.

Key learning outcomes:-

  • Understand signs of approaching death (last few days) and signs of impending death.
  • Awareness of reversible conditions at end of life.
  • Analysis and application of the barriers and issues in diagnosing dying (including recent NIHR research, April 2022).
  • Understand the NICE guidance on ‘care of dying adults in the last days of life’ (2015) and current guidance.
